We arrived in the beautiful city of Cusco, Peru this morning after another early morning flight. The flight was a bit late arriving in Cusco as it took the pilots a couple of tries to land the plane as the clouds were quite low (or perhaps Cusco is just that high!).
Cusco is located high in the Andes mountains where the air is fresh, but thin! In fact, the air is so thin that we are both fighting a bit of altitude sickness - mostly sleepiness and headaches.
It will take a couple of days to acclimatize to the altitude so we plan on taking it easy before our hike to Machu Picchu.
Our hotel (Hotel Ninos) is very charming with a beautiful center courtyard. We enjoyed having a late breakfast there this morning before our walk to the main city square called Plaza De Armas. It was on the walk back to the hotel when we really started to notice the altitude and felt short of breath, especially going up small hills or stairs. By the time we got back to our room we were tired so decided to have a nap... 6 hours later we woke - just in time for dinner!
Tenille had Peruvian stew for dinner which was made with beef, prunes, potatoes and almonds - delicious! Michael enjoyed the homemade pesto pasta (with basil from the hotel's garden).
Although we had a big nap this afternoon, the altitude in Cusco has gotten the best of us so it will be an early night. Cusco won today, but the Kennedys intend to fight the altitude and explore more tomorrow.
